Business Lockout Service in Ballantrae

A cook stepped into the alley with the recycling and the rear door swung shut behind him.

In plain words

On a commercial door the lock is rarely alone. A door contact feeds the alarm panel, a card reader drives an electric strike or a magnetic lock, and a monitoring company is watching for an opening outside business hours. A business lockout therefore starts with a conversation about those systems: who can disarm the alarm, whether the monitoring station should be told to expect an entry, and whether the electrified hardware has a mechanical override. Handling that first means the door opens without a patrol being dispatched, the access system is left working as designed, and the reader can be reset once someone is inside.

Sound familiar?

The heavy glass door has been scraping the threshold for weeks. This morning the key turns, you can hear the bolt trying to move, but it is jammed hard in the strike and the door stays shut no matter how the handle is pulled.

How the visit goes

  1. Alarm, reader and anything wired to the door

Before the door moves, the locksmith asks what will notice when it does. Is there an alarm with a contact on this door, who holds the code, and should the monitoring company be told to expect an entry? Is the door controlled by a card reader, keypad or intercom, and does it use an electric strike, fail-secure or fail-safe, or a magnetic lock, which releases? Is there a mechanical override cylinder and does anyone hold its key? Has the access-control provider got remote access to unlock it? These answers decide whether the opening is a phone call, a battery, an override key or conventional lock work, and they keep the security system intact afterwards.

  2. Opening an aluminium storefront door

The narrow stile of a glass storefront door carries a mortise cylinder that turns a cam inside a slim lock case. The locksmith picks or decodes that cylinder, then works the cam through its full travel to draw the hookbolt out of the frame or lift the deadlatch. A hookbolt hangs into its strike and cannot be pushed back with a shim, so the cylinder is the honest route in. Once open, the cylinder's set screw and cam alignment are checked, because a cam that has slipped a few degrees is a common reason the key stopped working, and the paddle inside is tested so staff can leave through the same door without a key.

  3. A written record for the business file

You leave with a plain account of the visit: which door was opened, the method used, whether any cylinder was drilled and replaced, what hardware was fitted, how many keys were cut and to whom they were handed. It notes the condition the hardware was found in, including anything worn or damaged before the locksmith arrived. Property managers ask for this when a unit's locks change, insurers ask for it after a loss, and franchise head offices ask for it as a matter of routine. It also makes the next service call shorter, because the person answering the phone can read what is on the door instead of guessing.

What affects the quote

  1. Damage from earlier attempts

A paddle bent by a pry bar, a stile scratched by a screwdriver or a cylinder wrenched by pliers may need repair as well as opening, and the locksmith points out what was already there before quoting it.

  2. Distance and access to the door

Travel is part of every call-out, and so is reaching the door: a plaza unit at street level, a suite behind a locked lobby, or a loading dock at the back of an industrial park each take a different amount of the locksmith's time.

  3. Broken key extraction and cylinder service

Removing a snapped key, cleaning and lubricating the cylinder and replacing a worn cam or tailpiece are added to the opening when that is what caused it, and a new key cut from code follows.

What to have ready

  • Has a key gone missing or left with a former employee, so that rekeying should follow?
  • Is there an alarm on the door, and who holds the code and the monitoring password?
  • Are there other doors, a roll-up shutter, a gate or a padlock you also need opened?

Business Lockout Service: questions

Questions
Our door uses fobs and the reader is dead. Can you get us in?

Yes, and usually without disturbing the access system. Many readers and electric strikes go dark because a power supply, breaker or backup battery has failed, and restoring power reopens the door. Where a mechanical override cylinder is fitted, it opens like any other lock; not every system includes one. An ordinary magnetic lock releases on its own once its power is actually removed, so a genuine power loss opens that door without waiting on a remote release. Afterwards, credentials and schedules are confirmed with whoever manages the system.

I am an employee, not the owner. Can you still open the door for me?

Yes, with the owner or a manager in the loop. Tell the locksmith who can confirm you work there and how to reach them. A call to the business owner, the regional manager or the property manager, ideally on a number that can be looked up rather than one you supply, settles it. Staff on an opening shift arrange this on the phone before the locksmith arrives so nothing waits at the door.

An employee left and never returned their keys. Should we rekey?

It is the sensible step, and a lockout visit is a convenient moment for it. Rekeying keeps your existing cylinders and changes the pins so a new key operates them and the unreturned one does nothing. If your doors use interchangeable cores, swapping the core takes minutes. Bring every door that shared the old key onto the new one, count the fresh keys into named hands and start a register so the next departure is a line in a book rather than a call.
