In plain words

The visit runs in a set order. On the phone you describe what the key does: refuses to turn, spins freely, or works only when the door is pushed. That description tells the locksmith what to bring. At the door, identification and your connection to the property are confirmed. The key, keyway, door fit and strike are examined before anything is forced. The opening uses the least disruptive method the condition allows. Then the failed part is serviced or replaced, the door is adjusted if it caused the jam, and the lock is tested open and closed with every key before the locksmith leaves.

Sound familiar?

It is the coldest morning of the winter and the key goes halfway into the side door and stops. There is frost on the face of the cylinder, and the door on the shaded side of the house has done this before.

How the visit goes

  1. Strike plate, bolt pocket and seal

The frame side gets as much attention as the door side. The locksmith looks at where the bolt meets the strike plate: scuff marks on the plate's edge, a bolt pocket shallower than the roughly twenty-five millimetres a deadbolt needs, paint or filler that has crept into the pocket, and weatherstripping thick enough to hold the door proud of the frame. A dab of chalk on the bolt end shows exactly where it lands. These findings explain a lock that works with the door open and jams when it is shut, and they point to a chisel, a screwdriver and a strike adjustment rather than to anything inside the cylinder.

  2. Inside a mortise case or lever set

For mortise locks and lever hardware the work moves from the cylinder to the case. The locksmith gets the door open, then removes the trim and draws the case out of the door edge. Inside, a broken lever return spring, a worn hub, a bent spindle or a latch that has lost its spring is replaced with the matching part, and years of dust and hardened grease are cleaned from the contact surfaces before a fresh application of a grease suited to lock mechanisms. The case is reassembled, the spindle and cylinder are refitted, and lever, key and thumb-turn are each tested so the latch and bolt travel fully.

  3. A lock that turns with two fingers

You leave with a lock that operates the way it did when it was new: the key seats fully, the plug turns without a wiggle, the bolt throws and retracts through its whole travel, and the door closes and locks without a shoulder. The locksmith has cycled it from both sides and with every key, and has shown you where the trouble was, whether that was a gritty keyway, a broken tailpiece or a strike plate a few millimetres out. If you had a habit of lifting the door or pulling it toward you to lock it, that habit is now retired.

What affects the quote

  1. Door and hinge adjustment

When the door caused the jam, hinge screws, shims, a strike move or a deepened bolt pocket are quoted as their own line beside the opening.

  2. Cutting fresh keys

If a worn key was part of the trouble, keys cut from the code or a fresh master are counted individually, so say how many the household or staff need.

  3. Small parts behind the cylinder

Tailpieces, cams, springs, cylinder caps and pins are minor items, but each one used is named on the quote so you can see what went into the lock.

What to have ready

  • Was the door painted, re-hung or fitted with new weatherstripping recently?
  • Is there another door you can use in the meantime?
  • What kind of lock is it: deadbolt, knob, lever, mortise or keypad?

Seized & Jammed Lock Opening: questions

Questions
My key is worn. Would a new copy have prevented this?

Possibly, if the key was part of the cause. A worn or bent key lifts the pins short of the shear line, so the plug binds even in a healthy cylinder, and a copy made from that key repeats the wear. A key cut from the code or from a crisp original is the fix. If the lock was also gritty or the door had moved, the new key would have eased things without settling them, which is why the locksmith checks all three.

The thumb-turn is stuck from inside and we need that door to get out. What should we do?

Use another exit for now and call. From the inside the fault is usually a bolt pinned by the frame or a bent spindle, both of which the locksmith frees without damage. A main exit door should open from inside without a key or special knowledge, so the repair leaves the door doing exactly that, and if the hardware on it was the wrong type for an exit, a thumb-turn deadbolt is suggested.

Can a seized lock be opened without damaging it?

In most cases, yes. A bolt held by the door is freed by relieving the pressure on the door. A cylinder clogged with grit or ice is cleaned and thawed until it turns. A failed tailpiece is bypassed and replaced. The lock stays on the door with its finish and your existing keys. A plug or shell that is worn, damaged, or eaten through by corrosion or earlier forcing is what has to be replaced, and that is explained before any work starts.
